Five two-way picture books by Jesper K. Lassen where the same pages tell Bob’s story read forward and Otto’s story read backward. Each is one misunderstanding between two best friends; neither boy is the villain. - What age? 4 to 8. Read-aloud from about four; early readers can read them alone (fewer than 135 words per book). - Can I hear a book read aloud? Yes: Half a Sentence, The Laugh and Room for Three have complete read-aloud videos (about five minutes each) on the VEN Method YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/@venmethod), playable on each book’s page and at https://bobandotto.com/#listen. The other two are coming. - What do they teach? Perspective-taking and checking before reacting, without stating a moral. In CASEL terms: social awareness and relationship skills. Each book page lists questions to ask after reading. - What research are they based on? They are designed around research on how children interpret others’ intentions (Crick & Dodge 1994), theory-of-mind development (Wellman et al. 2001), perspective-shifting conversation (Lohmann & Tomasello 2003) and discovering mental states from story rather than being told (Peskin & Astington 2004). Sources: https://bobandotto.com/how-it-works/#sources - Is it a palindrome book? No. The line order reverses, not the letters: a reverso (reverse poem), written as a duet. - Where can I buy them? Direct from the publisher at https://bobandotto.com/shop/ (English and Spanish paperbacks, worldwide shipping), or in paperback at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Walmart, Bookshop.org, Blackwell’s (UK), Bol.com (NL), Booktopia (AU), Buscalibre (Latin America) and any bookshop by ISBN; Kindle in English and Spanish. Stores by country: https://bobandotto.com/where-to-buy/ - Class sets or bulk orders? Email jesper@danishmentalist.com with titles, quantities, language, organization, delivery address and date needed, for a quote. - Is there a Spanish version? Yes: Bob y Otto — Media frase, La risa, Sitio para tres, Buenas noches Otto, En los zapatos de Otto — in paperback ($8.99, ISBNs 979-8-9979707-5-8 to -9-6) and on Kindle. Same pictures and page structure as the English, so the two editions can be read side by side: https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/ - Who is the author? Jesper K. Lassen: Danish mentalist (more than 1,000 performances, his own documentary series on Danish national television), founder of VEN Method, a social-emotional learning company (venmethod.com). - Not to be confused with “Bob and Otto” (2007) by Robert O. Bruel, a different picture book about a worm and a caterpillar. ## Reviews - Deb Preston, Children’s Book Review, debpreston.com, 24 September 2026 (review and author interview): https://debpreston.com/bob-and-otto-review/ — “You’re seeing both sides of the story figuratively, while reading it from both sides of the book literally.” - Michelle Marcotte, Great Books for Kids (YouTube video review, 3 October 2026): https://www.youtube.com/shorts/ouEIAJVrg70 - Amazon: every Bob & Otto book is rated 5 out of 5 stars (checked 12 October 2026). Lassen · Published by VEN Method · Updated 4 October 2026 Every Bob & Otto book is one small misunderstanding between two best friends, told so that the same printed words give you one boy’s side when you read from the front and the other boy’s side when you turn the book over. This page explains the thinking behind that design, for children aged four to eight: the psychology it draws on, how the text is made, what the pictures are doing, and how to talk about the books afterwards. ## One habit, practiced five ways The books practice one habit: **before you decide what someone meant, ask how they heard it**. Each book isolates one kind of social cue that children commonly misread, and shows it from both sides: - [*Half a Sentence*](https://bobandotto.com/books/half-a-sentence/): an overheard fragment, taken as the whole message. - [*The Laugh*](https://bobandotto.com/books/the-laugh/): a laugh, taken as laughing *at* you. - [*Room for Three*](https://bobandotto.com/books/room-for-three/): a friend with someone new, taken as being replaced. - [*Goodnight, Otto*](https://bobandotto.com/books/goodnight-otto/): a silence, taken as anger. - [*In Otto’s Shoes*](https://bobandotto.com/books/in-ottos-shoes/): a hurt you cannot see from the outside. In every book, both boys are partly right. Bob is never wrong about what he saw or heard, only about what it meant. Otto never means harm, but he always leaves out the part that would have helped. Nobody is the villain. The misunderstanding is the problem, and it belongs to both of them. ## The psychology ### Misreading intentions Before a child responds to anything a friend does, they have to interpret it. In the social information-processing model developed by Nicki Crick and Kenneth Dodge, interpretation is a step of its own, between noticing a cue and choosing a response[1](https://bobandotto.com/how-it-works/#src-crick). Children who habitually resolve ambiguous cues with a hostile reading get into more conflict: a meta-analysis of 41 studies and more than 6,000 participants found a robust association between hostile attribution of intent and aggressive behavior[2](https://bobandotto.com/how-it-works/#src-orobio). Interpretation can also be trained. The BrainPower program taught elementary-school boys to tell accidental, helpful and hostile intentions apart, and their hostile attributions fell compared with control groups[3](https://bobandotto.com/how-it-works/#src-hudley). Those were older children, selected for aggression, so the lesson for younger readers is about the mechanism rather than a promised outcome. But the mechanism is exactly what every Bob & Otto book slows down and shows: Bob reads a cue, decides what it means, and acts, and the other side of the book shows him the reading he skipped. ### Why ages four to eight Between about three and five, most children come to pass classic false-belief tasks: they understand that someone can believe something that is not true[4](https://bobandotto.com/how-it-works/#src-wellman). The books are written for the years just after that shift, when a child can hold the idea that a belief can be wrong and is ready for the harder version: *my* belief can be wrong, and my friend may know something I don’t. ### Discovering, not being told The books never state a moral and never use the word “perspective.” That is a design choice with some evidence behind it. In a study of four-year-olds who heard about 70 picture books over four weeks, texts that spelled out characters’ mental states increased the children’s use of mental-state words, but children who had to infer those states from the story did better on false-belief tasks[5](https://bobandotto.com/how-it-works/#src-peskin). It is one small study, so it is suggestive rather than settled. As picture-book author Mo Willems put it: "For me a good book is a question, not an answer."[16](https://bobandotto.com/how-it-works/#src-willems) ### Turning the book over Children’s understanding of other minds grows through talk that sets two perspectives side by side. In one training study, three-year-olds who took part in short sessions of “perspective-shifting” conversation improved on false-belief tasks, while children who saw the same objects without that conversation did not[6](https://bobandotto.com/how-it-works/#src-lohmann). In another, two months of conversations about mental-state words after story readings improved four-year-olds’ false-belief understanding[7](https://bobandotto.com/how-it-works/#src-ornaghi). Parents who talk more about thoughts, knowledge and feelings tend to have children with better social understanding, though that evidence is correlational[8](https://bobandotto.com/how-it-works/#src-tompkins). A Bob & Otto book builds the perspective shift into the object itself: the child physically turns the book over to get the other side, and the conversation starts there. ### The questions afterwards Every book’s title page ends with the same instruction to the grown-up: "then ask your reader what the other boy meant." Asking open questions during and after shared reading is the core of dialogic reading, which the What Works Clearinghouse rated as having positive effects on young children’s oral language[9](https://bobandotto.com/how-it-works/#src-wwc). That evidence is about language, not perspective-taking, but it is the same habit: the adult asks, the child explains. Each book page on this site has a set of questions for after Bob’s side, after Otto’s side, and after both. ### Where it fits in social-emotional learning In the CASEL framework, the books sit mainly in **social awareness** (understanding others’ perspectives and empathizing with them) and **relationship skills** (communicating clearly and resolving conflicts constructively)[10](https://bobandotto.com/how-it-works/#src-casel). A large meta-analysis of school-based social-emotional learning programs found gains in social skills, behavior and academic performance[11](https://bobandotto.com/how-it-works/#src-durlak); the books are not a program, but they are built to be used inside one, in about ten minutes. ## The form: one text, read both ways The text of each book is a reverse poem, or “reverso,” a form the poet Marilyn Singer invented and introduced in *Mirror Mirror* (2010). Her rule is that the reversed poem may change only punctuation and capitalization, and it "has to say something different"[12](https://bobandotto.com/how-it-works/#src-singer_hb). She has listed reversos among the hardest forms she has written[12](https://bobandotto.com/how-it-works/#src-singer_hb), and her last tip for anyone trying one is "Don’t get discouraged — reversos are hard to write."[13](https://bobandotto.com/how-it-works/#src-singer_br) The Bob & Otto books add constraints a single poem does not have: - The text is a **duet**. Every spread has one line for each boy, Bob on the left and Otto on the right, and the lines keep their owners in both directions. - **Not even the punctuation changes**: the book is printed once, so both readings use exactly the same marks. - Each direction has to be a **real story with its own question**, not the first story rewound. Forward, a book is usually a sequence of events; backward, the same lines become a chain of reasons. - The **first and last spreads carry the same line** on both pages ("You are my best friend." "Are you nearly asleep?"), so every reading opens and closes in the same place. - Some lines are left **deliberately unfinished**, so that the line after them completes them, and because the book is read both ways, each has two different completions. In *Goodnight, Otto*, "All the way down the middle—" is followed forward by "One roof over the two of us." and backward by "I stayed on my half." - In three of the books, **one line hands a boy’s side over** ("Now you hear my side."), placed one spread from the end, so it is the last line before the closing spread in one direction and the first line after the opening spread in the other. - All of this has to fit in **fewer than 135 words**, one short line per page, for a child of four. Working inside rules like these has a long history in literature. The French group Oulipo, founded in 1960 by Raymond Queneau and François Le Lionnais, made a practice of “self-restricting” methods of writing[14](https://bobandotto.com/how-it-works/#src-oulipo); Queneau’s *Exercices de style* tells one small incident again and again in different ways. Psychology research has found that a well-chosen constraint can make writing more creative rather than less, as in Dr. Seuss’s *Green Eggs and Ham*, written with just fifty different words[15](https://bobandotto.com/how-it-works/#src-haught). The constraint here serves a single purpose: when the words cannot change, the only thing left to change is the point of view. ## The pictures In a picture book, words and pictures can say the same thing, add to each other, or pull against each other[17](https://bobandotto.com/how-it-works/#src-nikolajeva). In Bob & Otto, the pictures follow a few fixed rules so that they stay true whichever way the book is read: - **The sparrow.** A sparrow sits on every one of Otto’s pages and never on Bob’s. A child who cannot read yet always knows whose side they are on, and the books tell the reader where to start: "Start on the page the sparrow is sitting on." - **Bob is never drawn angry**, only puzzled, hurt or careful. Both boys stay likeable, so the reader never has to take sides against either of them. - **One moment per spread**, so that each picture still makes sense when the reader arrives at it from the other direction. - **The same two boys, the same type, a new world.** Characters and lettering are identical across the series; the setting and color change with each story, from the fence of *Half a Sentence* to the night-blue tent of *Goodnight, Otto*. - **Each boy has his own page** at his end of the book: a few short lines in his own voice, including what he is learning ("I hear things fast. Sometimes faster than they were said." "I say things slowly. Sometimes too slowly."). ## Why so few words Most picture books run to several hundred words. A Bob & Otto book uses about a hundred, one line per page. Deb Preston noticed it in her review: "…these books say a lot in just a few simple words."[18](https://bobandotto.com/how-it-works/#src-deb) The brevity is what makes a second reading possible at bedtime, and what lets a child read the book alone once they can. It is also what the form demands: every word has to work twice, so there is no room for a word that only works once. ## What readers have said Deb Preston’s children’s book review called the series "a thought-provoking, discussion-inducing series that kids and adults alike are sure to enjoy" and summed up the format: "You’re seeing both sides of the story figuratively, while reading it from both sides of the book literally."[18](https://bobandotto.com/how-it-works/#src-deb) Michelle Marcotte reviewed the series on her YouTube channel, Great Books for Kids[19](https://bobandotto.com/how-it-works/#src-michelle). As of October 2026, every book in the series is rated 5 out of 5 stars on Amazon. ## Using the books 1. Read Bob’s side from the front cover, one spread at a time. 2. Stop before you turn the book over and ask: *what do you think the other boy meant?* 3. Turn the whole book over and read Otto’s side, starting on the page with the sparrow. 4. Ask the “both sides” questions from the book’s page on this site. Ten minutes in all. For a whole class, the free print-at-home mini books ([*The Swing* and *We Forgot It Again*](https://bobandotto.com/#free)) work the same way on a single folded sheet. For class sets of the real books, see [orders and bulk copies](https://bobandotto.com/orders/). ## The five books, one by one Each book has its own page: Bob’s side and Otto’s side, the psychology behind it, how the text does it, and questions to ask after reading. - [Book 1: **Half a Sentence** *— an overheard half-sentence, taken as the whole message*](https://bobandotto.com/books/half-a-sentence/) - [Book 2: **The Laugh** *— a friend’s laugh, taken as laughing at you*](https://bobandotto.com/books/the-laugh/) - [Book 3: **Room for Three** *— a friend with someone new, taken as being replaced*](https://bobandotto.com/books/room-for-three/) - [Book 4: **Goodnight, Otto** *— a friend’s silence, taken as anger*](https://bobandotto.com/books/goodnight-otto/) - [Book 5: **In Otto’s Shoes** *— a friend’s pain that cannot be seen from outside*](https://bobandotto.com/books/in-ottos-shoes/) ## Questions people ask What is a two-way picture book? A book printed once that tells one character’s story when read front to back and another character’s story when the book is turned over and the same pages are read back to front. Bob & Otto is a series of five. Is Bob & Otto a palindrome book? No. A palindrome reads the same letter by letter in both directions. Bob & Otto reverses the order of the lines, not the letters: a reverso, or reverse poem, written as a duet between two characters. What age are the books for? Ages 4 to 8. They work as read-alouds from about four, and early readers can read them alone: each book uses fewer than 135 words. What research are the books based on? The books are designed around established research on how children interpret others’ intentions, develop theory of mind and learn through conversation during shared reading. The sources are listed on this page. Who wrote the books? Jesper K. Lassen, a Danish mentalist and the founder of VEN Method, a social-emotional learning company. The books are published by VEN Method. How do I order class sets? Email jesper@danishmentalist.com with the titles, quantities and delivery address for a quote. By Ingram, the printer and distributor behind the paperbacks in every bookshop. Ingram prints each order to order at its nearest site, in the United States, the United Kingdom or Australia, and posts it to you. We don’t keep a warehouse, so nothing is ever out of stock in either language. How long does it take? Printing takes a few business days, then the post. Expect about 5–10 business days in the US, 5–12 business days in the UK and Europe, 7–15 business days in Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and 10–25 business days elsewhere. Orders are passed to the printer on the next business day. Why buy here rather than on Amazon? Same book, same price. The difference is who gets the money: when you buy direct, more of each sale reaches the author and the small company that publishes the books, and the Spanish paperbacks are always available. If you prefer a store, every one that stocks the books is listed, country by country, on the [where to buy](https://bobandotto.com/where-to-buy/) page. Can I pay in euros, pounds or another currency? Prices are in US dollars. Stripe, which handles the payment, accepts cards from almost every country, and your bank converts the amount at its usual rate. Apple Pay and Google Pay work too, where your device supports them. Will I pay customs duties or tax? Orders to the US, the UK and the EU are printed inside that market, so there are no import charges. For other countries the parcel is sent duty-unpaid, and your customs office may add duty or tax on delivery; for a few small books that is usually nothing or very little, but we can’t promise it. What if a book arrives damaged, or doesn’t arrive? Email [jesper@danishmentalist.com](mailto:jesper@danishmentalist.com) with your order number and a photo, and a replacement is printed and sent at no charge. I need more than twenty copies, or a class set. For class sets, schools, libraries and bookshops there is a better price than the shop can offer: [bulk and school orders](https://bobandotto.com/orders/), or email [jesper@danishmentalist.com](mailto:jesper@danishmentalist.com). Is my card safe? Payment happens on Stripe’s own secure page; the card number never touches this website. The publisher sees your name, address and what you bought, nothing else. ## Rather buy from a store? The paperbacks are also in bookshops and online stores around the world, and on Kindle in both languages. Canonical page: https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/ For families and classrooms where children are growing up with both languages: what the research supports, what it doesn’t, and how to use one short two-way book to build both languages at once. By Jesper K. Lassen, author of the series · Published by VEN Method · Sources checked 12 October 2026 ## The short answer A child who hears Spanish at home and English at school (or the other way round) is building two vocabularies at once, and each one grows with the amount of good input it gets[4](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-hoff). Reading the same short picture book in both languages is a simple way to give both languages the same rich, repeated, talked-about input, on the same pictures, in the same week. The story is already understood, so the second reading is all language. That is the honest case. It is not that bilingual books make children cleverer (the evidence for a general “bilingual advantage” in attention or self-control is weak once you look at all the studies[15](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-lowe)[16](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-lehtonen)). It is that reading together builds words, that two languages don’t confuse a child, and that keeping the home language is good for the child and for the family. The research behind each of those is below. ## What the research actually says ### Reading together builds vocabulary, and talking about the book builds more A meta-analysis of sixteen studies found that *dialogic* reading, where the grown-up asks questions and builds on the child’s answers instead of just reading, had a moderate effect on children’s expressive vocabulary and a small effect on receptive vocabulary[1](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-mol). The gains were largest for two- to four-year-olds and smaller for five- and six-year-olds, so the earlier the habit starts, the more it gives. Hearing the *same* book again also matters: three-year-olds who heard the same stories repeatedly over a week learned and kept new words far better than children who met the same words spread across different books[2](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-horst). A book of a hundred words, read many times, is exactly the kind of book that study describes. ### Two languages don’t confuse a child, and don’t slow them down Spanish–English toddlers score lower than monolinguals when each language is tested on its own, but about the same when the words in both languages are counted together, and each language grows in step with how much the child hears of it[4](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-hoff). Researchers who review the field for parents put it plainly: bilingual children are not more likely than monolingual children to have difficulties with language, mixing the two languages in one sentence is normal and not a sign of confusion, and what matters is that exposure to each language is substantial[3](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-byers). The US National Academies’ 2017 report reached the same conclusion: there is no evidence that using two languages at home puts a child’s development at risk, and it advises adults to talk and read to children in the language they themselves know best[5](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-nasem). ### Spanish helps English (within limits) The idea that skills in one language support the other has been around since Cummins proposed it in 1979[7](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-cummins), and the evidence is clearest for the mechanics of reading: a meta-analysis found moderate-to-large links between the two languages for phonological awareness and decoding, but only small links for oral vocabulary[8](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-melby). So a child who learns to hear the sounds in *Media frase* is helped when they meet *Half a Sentence*, while the words themselves mostly have to be learned twice. There is some evidence that Spanish vocabulary knowledge supports English reading comprehension in older bilingual children[9](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-proctor). The practical conclusion: read in both languages and expect the *stories*, the *sounds* and the *habit* to carry across, not the word lists. ### Teaching the words in both languages beats English-only In a randomised study of 42 Spanish-speaking preschoolers, children taught new book vocabulary in Spanish *and* English during small-group shared reading learned more words in both languages than children taught in English only[6](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-mendez). It is a small study, and at follow-up the advantage held only for the Spanish words, but it is the closest experimental test of the idea on this page, and it came out in favour of using both languages around the same book. ### Dual-language books in classrooms Canadian kindergartners read to from dual-language books made greater gains in letter–sound knowledge than classmates read to in English only, and the gains were for children who spoke the second language at home, while the others were not held back[10](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-naqvi). Case studies of primary children in London who had drifted into English-only found that reading dual-language books with their mothers let them carry reading strategies from one language to the other, compare the two texts, and gain confidence in both[11](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-sneddon). In a Calgary study, a teacher read each book in English and a guest from the community read it in Urdu, Tagalog or Spanish; children compared sounds and meanings, and the quiet second-language learners became the ones with something to say[12](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-zaidi). The common thread, which translanguaging researchers describe as treating a child’s whole repertoire as one resource rather than two problems[13](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-garcia), is that switching between the languages is the point, not a slip. ### Keeping the home language keeps the family close The National Academies’ review notes that a strong home-language base supports later languages, that home-language use is tied to a healthy sense of identity, and that losing it carries risks, among them weaker relationships with parents[5](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-nasem). A study of 414 teenagers from immigrant families found modest links between heritage-language proficiency and closeness and conversation with parents, stronger for some groups than others[14](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-oh). These are correlations, not proof, and the effects are small; but they point the same way as common sense. A child who can read *Buenas noches, Otto* with their abuela has one more thing to share with her. ### What we are not claiming Two large meta-analyses, one of children aged three to seventeen and one of adults, found that the much-reported bilingual advantage in executive functioning shrinks to about zero once publication bias is accounted for[15](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-lowe)[16](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-lehtonen). So this page does not say bilingual books make children smarter, more focused or better at self-control. One study of four- to six-year-olds did find that children exposed to a second language were better at taking an adult’s perspective in a communication game[17](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-fan), which is exactly what *Bob & Otto* is about; but it is a single study with small groups, and its authors hedge their conclusion, so we do too. ## Why these books suit a two-language home *Bob & Otto* and *Bob y Otto* are the same five books, page for page. Each has one short line per page (about a hundred words in all), the same pictures in both editions, and the same turn-it-over structure: read from the front it is Bob’s side, turn the book over and the same words in reverse order are Otto’s. That gives a child three things that most picture books in translation don’t. - **A line-for-line match.** Page 7 in Spanish is page 7 in English, with the same picture. Lay both open and a child can see that "Bob no es mi amigo" and "Bob is not my friend" are the same thing said two ways, which is the comparison the classroom studies above were built on[12](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-zaidi)[11](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-sneddon). - **Little text, read often.** A hundred words is short enough to read in both languages in one sitting, and short enough to read again tomorrow, which is what helps words stick[2](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-horst). - **A story the pictures carry.** The flip, the sparrow that marks Otto’s pages, and the misunderstanding itself are all in the art, so a child who is weaker in one language can still follow the whole story in it and let the pictures teach the words. - **Something to talk about.** Every book turns on a line a child can argue with ("Te estás riendo de mí"; "You are laughing at me"), and talking about the book is where the vocabulary gains in the research come from[1](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-mol). The questions on each book’s page work in either language. ## How to read one book in two languages There is no one right way, and the research supports several. Pick what fits your family. ### At home - **Each grown-up in their strongest language.** The Academies’ advice is to read to a child in the language you know best[5](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-nasem). If one parent’s Spanish is better, that parent reads *Bob y Otto*; the other reads *Bob & Otto*. The child gets the same story, twice, from the two people who matter most. - **Same book, two nights.** Spanish tonight, English tomorrow, then let the child choose. Start from either cover each time; a child who picks the back cover is already practicing taking the other side. - **Side by side.** Open both editions to the same page. Read the line in one language, ask "¿Y en inglés?", and let the child find it. Don’t correct the mix if they answer in both; that is normal[3](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-byers). - **Ask, don’t quiz.** "Why did Bob run away?" works in any language and does more for vocabulary than "What’s this word?"[1](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-mol). There are ready questions, in English, on each book’s page: [the five books](https://bobandotto.com/books/). - **Let the sparrow help.** The sparrow sits on every one of Otto’s pages in both editions. A child who can’t yet read either language can still tell you whose side they are on. ### In a dual-language or ESL classroom - **Two readers, one book.** The teacher reads the English, a Spanish-speaking colleague, parent or older student reads the Spanish, and the class compares a line or two: which words sound alike, which don’t[12](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-zaidi). - **Teach a few words in both.** The study with the clearest result taught the same small set of book words in Spanish and in English over several readings[6](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-mendez). Five words per book is plenty: *valla*/*fence*, *charco*/*puddle*, *cuerda*/*rope*, *tienda de campaña*/*tent*, *zapatos*/*shoes*. - **Send the Spanish home.** A child whose family reads Spanish takes *Bob y Otto* home and brings the story back to the English reading at school; that is the pattern in which dual-language books helped most[10](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-naqvi)[11](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-sneddon). - **Class sets** in either language or both are quoted directly by the publisher: [orders and class sets](https://bobandotto.com/orders/). ## Questions parents ask Won’t reading the same story in two languages confuse my child? No. Children sort the two languages out from infancy, mixing them in one sentence is a normal stage rather than confusion, and bilingual children have no more language difficulties than monolingual ones[3](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-byers)[5](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-nasem). Reading the same story twice makes the second language *easier*, because the child already knows what is happening. Which language should we read first? Whichever the child knows better, so that the story lands; then the other. After that, let them choose. If the child is stronger in English and you want to build Spanish, read the Spanish more often, because each language grows with the amount of input it gets[4](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-hoff). My own Spanish (or English) isn’t great. Should I still read it? Read in the language you know best[5](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-nasem); that is the one where you can ask questions and talk about the story, which is where the gains come from[1](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-mol). For the other language, a hundred-word book is short enough to prepare, and the pictures do much of the work. The Kindle editions can be read aloud by a phone, but a person who asks questions is better than a device that doesn’t. What ages is this for? The books are written for four- to eight-year-olds: a read-aloud from about four, and short enough for early readers to manage alone in either language. The dialogic-reading evidence is strongest below five[1](https://bobandotto.com/bilingual/#src-mol), so the younger you start the talking-about-it habit, the better. Is the Spanish a proper translation? The Spanish editions keep the same pictures, the same page breaks and the same one-line-per-page structure, so the two-way reading works in Spanish exactly as it does in English: the same lines in reverse order tell Otto’s side. Titles: *Media frase*, *La risa*, *Sitio para tres*, *Buenas noches, Otto*, *En los zapatos de Otto*. Where do I get both editions? Lassen is a Danish mentalist who wrote and illustrated *Bob & Otto*, five picture books that each tell two stories. Read from the front, a book is Bob’s side of an everyday misunderstanding. Turn it over, and the same words, read in reverse line order, bring his friend Otto’s side into focus. Bob’s line is on every left-hand page and Otto’s on every right-hand page, so both boys’ voices are present in both readings. Read from the front cover, it is Bob’s story. Turn the whole book over and read from the back, and it is Otto’s. Not a word or punctuation mark changes. Only the order of the lines reverses, and with it what they mean. A sparrow sits on every one of Otto’s pages, so a child who can’t read yet always knows whose side they’re on. ### Read from the front 1. I thought that was your answer. 2. I stayed on my half. 3. All the way down the middle— 4. One roof over the two of us. ### Turn it over 1. One roof over the two of us. 2. All the way down the middle— 3. I stayed on my half. 4. I thought that was your answer. Two facing spreads from *Goodnight, Otto*. The unfinished line "All the way down the middle—" is finished by a different line in each direction: forward, by the roof the boys share; turned over, by the half Otto stayed on. [More on the form and the psychology behind it →](https://bobandotto.com/how-it-works/) ## Interview ideas 1. ### Why a mentalist became a children’s author A mentalist’s work depends on what people notice and what they miss. Jesper talks about turning that attention toward children aged four to eight, and why the books hand a child the other side instead of telling them how to feel. 2. ### How perspective changes what we understand One sentence, heard halfway, means something else. Using moments from the books (an overheard sentence, a laugh, a silence in a tent), a conversation about how children and adults fill in what they didn’t hear, and the one question that could have changed it. 3. ### A live demonstration, then a conversation Jesper reads a book from the front cover, turns it over on air and reads the same pages back as the other boy. Then a conversation about misunderstandings between children: where they start, and how grown-ups can talk about them. Works on camera, on radio and on a podcast. Lassen publishes Bob & Otto, five picture books that tell two stories in one Read from the front, each book is one friend’s side of an everyday misunderstanding. Turn it over, and the same words, read in reverse line order, tell the other friend’s side. **COPENHAGEN, Denmark, October 2026** — Jesper K. Lassen, a Danish mentalist with more than 1,000 live performances and his own documentary series on DR, Denmark’s national broadcaster, has written and illustrated *Bob & Otto*, a series of five picture books for children aged four to eight, published by VEN Method. Each book is printed once and read twice. Read from the front cover, it is Bob’s side of a small misunderstanding between two best friends. Turn the book over and read the same pages from the back, and it is Otto’s side. Not a word or punctuation mark changes; only the order of the lines reverses. Both boys speak on every spread, Bob on the left-hand page and Otto on the right, so both voices are present in both readings. A sparrow sits on every one of Otto’s pages, so a child who can’t read yet always knows whose side they are on. “The child isn’t told to see the other side. They hold it,” Lassen told children’s book reviewer Deb Preston in a September interview. “Letting them choose a starting cover is already practicing perspective.” The five misunderstandings are ones children meet every week: a sentence overheard through a fence (*Half a Sentence*), a laugh that might be at you (*The Laugh*), a best friend with someone new (*Room for Three*), a silence in a tent at night (*Goodnight, Otto*) and a hurt you can’t see from the outside (*In Otto’s Shoes*). Neither boy is the villain. Each book uses fewer than 135 words. The text of each book is a reverso, or reverse poem, a form introduced by the poet Marilyn Singer, in which the same lines read in reverse order say something different. *Bob & Otto* writes it as a duet between two characters and builds the reversal into the book itself. Of the first book he wrote, *Half a Sentence*, Lassen said: “That pattern is painfully familiar. I can see myself in it. Childhood misunderstandings, and the adult ones too, where we react to a fragment and miss the rest.” In her review, Preston called the books “a thought-provoking, discussion-inducing series that kids and adults alike are sure to enjoy.” Michelle Marcotte reviewed the series on her YouTube channel, *Great Books for Kids Reviewed by Michelle Marcotte*. The books are available in paperback ($8.99) in English and, as *Bob y Otto*, in Spanish: direct from bobandotto.com, from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Walmart and Bookshop.org, and from bookshops worldwide through Ingram, by ISBN. Both languages are also on Kindle ($2.99). Lassen is available for remote interviews and, by arrangement, for in-person appearances in the United States. ### About Jesper K. Lassen Jesper K. Otto was still talking. *Half a Sentence* is built around one of the most common ways children (and adults) get hurt by each other: reacting to a fragment as if it were the whole message. Lassen, author of the series · Published by VEN Method · Updated 17 October 2026 Front cover (Bob’s side) and back cover (Otto’s side, *Half a Sentence*). ## Hear it read aloud The whole book, read aloud, in 4 min 48 s. Turn the book over and read the same pages from the back, and it is Otto’s. Neither boy is wrong about everything, and neither is right about everything. ### Bob’s side What he believes : Otto said “Bob is not my friend.” He heard it with his own ears, so it must be true. What he gets right : He did hear those exact words. He is not imagining them. What he misses : The sentence was not finished. “Bob is not my friend — Bob is my **best** friend.” In his own words, from his page in the book: "I hear things fast. Sometimes faster than they were said." "I’m learning to hear the whole thing." ### Otto’s side What he believes : He was telling someone the most important thing about Bob, and saying it well. What he gets right : He meant every word of it, and the words were kind. What he misses : He put the important half last, and by the time he got to it, Bob was gone. In his own words, from his page in the book: "I say things slowly. Sometimes too slowly." "I’m learning to say the important half first." ## The psychology behind it Every social moment asks a child to do something before they can respond: read the cue, then decide what it means. Psychologists Nicki Crick and Kenneth Dodge described this as a sequence of steps, with *interpretation* sitting between noticing and reacting[1](https://bobandotto.com/books/half-a-sentence/#src-crick). Children who habitually fill in ambiguous cues with a hostile meaning get into more conflict; a meta-analysis of 41 studies with over 6,000 participants found a robust link between hostile attribution of intent and aggressive behavior[2](https://bobandotto.com/books/half-a-sentence/#src-orobio). That research mostly concerns older and more aggressive children, but the mechanism is the same one every four-year-old meets on a playground: you hear part of something, and your mind finishes it for you. *Half a Sentence* puts that moment under a magnifying glass. On one spread the reader sees the two versions side by side: on Bob’s page, "“Bob is not my friend.”" On Otto’s page, the whole thing: "“Bob is not my friend — Bob is my BEST friend.”" A child does not have to be told that Bob misheard. They can see the missing half with their own eyes, on the page next to it. That matters for how the lesson lands. In a study of 4-year-olds who heard about 70 picture books over four weeks, books that spelled out characters’ mental states increased the children’s mental-state vocabulary, but children who had to work out those states from the story did better on false-belief tasks[3](https://bobandotto.com/books/half-a-sentence/#src-peskin). It is one small study, so it is suggestive rather than conclusive, but it fits what this book does: it never says “Bob jumped to a conclusion.” The reader finds that out by turning the book over. The age range is deliberate too. Around ages 3 to 5, children go from failing to passing classic false-belief tasks: they come to understand that someone can believe something that is not true[4](https://bobandotto.com/books/half-a-sentence/#src-wellman). Bob is a believable, sympathetic example of exactly that. He is not wrong about what he heard; he is wrong about what it meant. For a child who has just acquired the idea that beliefs can be false, that is the next step: *my* belief can be false too. The book also gives both boys a job. Bob is learning to listen to the end. Otto is learning to say the important half first. Neither is the villain, and the misunderstanding is shared. That is closer to how real friendships break and mend, and it keeps a young reader from learning the wrong lesson (“the one who got hurt was right”) or its opposite (“the one who got hurt was silly”). ## How the words do it The book is one short text, printed once, that reads as Bob’s story from the front and as Otto’s story from the back. Each spread has one line for each boy. Forward, you read Bob’s page and then Otto’s. Turn the book over and read back to front, and Otto’s page comes first. The words do not change. Their order does, and with it, what they mean. Take spread six. Forward, Bob says "I ran off with my half." and Otto’s page answers "I turned around and you were already gone." That is cause and effect: Bob ran, so Otto turned to an empty space. Read from Otto’s cover, the same pair arrives the other way round, effect first: Otto turned around and Bob was gone. Why? Because Bob ran off with his half. Why did he? Because, on the next page back, "I gave the good half to the wrong side." The forward story is a sequence of events. The backward story is a chain of reasons. That is the difference between the two readings. The line that carries the book’s idea is "A fence has gaps." / "A sentence has two halves." The fence is where the story starts, and it is also the shape of the misunderstanding: something you can see and hear through, but only in pieces. One spread before the end, Otto says "Now you hear my side." Read forward, it is the last line before the closing spread. Read backward, it comes straight after the opening spread, so it frames Otto’s whole story as the other side, without the word “perspective” appearing anywhere in the book. The first and last spreads carry the same sentence on both pages, "You are my best friend." Whichever cover you start from, you begin and end in the same place. I ran off with my half. → I turned around and you were already gone. Forward: one thing happens, then the next. I turned around and you were already gone. → I ran off with my half. → I gave the good half to the wrong side. Backward: each line explains the one before it. ## What the pictures do The fence stands between the two boys at the start, the way the missing half of the sentence does. A sparrow sits on every one of Otto’s pages and never on Bob’s, so even a child who cannot read yet knows whose page they are on. Bob is never drawn angry: he is puzzled, hurt, careful. That keeps both boys likeable, which is what lets a child stand on either side of the fence without taking sides against the other. ## Questions to ask after reading Open questions work best: there is no single right answer, and the point is for the child to explain what they think. Ask a few, not all. ### After Bob’s side 1. What did Bob hear through the fence? 2. How do you think Bob felt when he heard it? What did he do next? 3. What do you think Otto was going to say? ### After turning it over 1. What was Otto doing while Bob was running away? 2. What was the important half of Otto’s sentence? 3. Why do you think Otto offers to say it slowly? ### After both sides 1. Was Bob wrong about what he heard? Was he wrong about what it meant? 2. Have you ever heard only part of something and felt upset? What happened? 3. What could Bob do before running off? What could Otto do to make it easier to hear? ## In a classroom or counseling session Read Bob’s side together, then stop and ask the class to guess the rest of Otto’s sentence. Write a few guesses on the board. Turn the book over and read Otto’s side. Finish with the “both sides” questions above. The whole thing takes about ten minutes. Ordering for a class or a school? Class sets are quoted directly: [see orders and bulk copies](https://bobandotto.com/orders/). ## Questions people ask about *Half a Sentence* What age is *Half a Sentence* for? Ages 4 to 8. It works as a read-aloud from about four, and early readers can read it themselves: there are about 130 words in the whole book. What is *Half a Sentence* about? Bob overhears his best friend Otto through a fence saying “Bob is not my friend” and runs off. From Otto’s side, the sentence continues: “Bob is my best friend.” The book is about reacting to half of a message. How do you read a two-way book? Read Bob’s side from the front cover, one spread at a time. When it ends, turn the whole book over and read the same pages back to front for Otto’s side. Start on the page the sparrow is sitting on. Turn the book over and read the same pages from the back, and it is Otto’s. Neither boy is wrong about everything, and neither is right about everything. ### Bob’s side What he believes : Otto is laughing at him for falling in the puddle. What he gets right : Otto is laughing, loudly, right when Bob is wet and embarrassed. Anyone might think the same. What he misses : Otto fell in the same puddle yesterday. Nobody was there to laugh with him. He is laughing at himself. In his own words, from his page in the book: "I like puddles from above. Not from inside." "I’m learning that a laugh can mean lots of things." ### Otto’s side What he believes : Bob will know the laugh is friendly. It obviously is, from where Otto is standing. What he gets right : He was not laughing at Bob, and he proves it by sitting down in the puddle beside him. What he misses : From the inside of a puddle, a laugh sounds like it is aimed at you. He did not say why he was laughing. In his own words, from his page in the book: "I laugh before I can stop it. I’m practicing the stopping." "I’m learning to say why I’m laughing, out loud." ## The psychology behind it Laughter is an ambiguous cue. The same sound can mean joy, relief, nerves, affection or mockery, and the listener has to decide which, usually in a second and often while embarrassed. Research on social information processing describes this decision as the interpretation step that sits between noticing a cue and responding to it[1](https://bobandotto.com/books/the-laugh/#src-crick). Children who tend to resolve ambiguous moments with a hostile reading get into more conflict with peers; across 41 studies, hostile attribution of intent was consistently linked to aggressive behavior[2](https://bobandotto.com/books/the-laugh/#src-orobio). The good news in that research is that interpretation can be practiced. The BrainPower program taught elementary-school boys to tell accidental, helpful and hostile intentions apart from social cues, and their hostile attributions and endorsement of retaliation fell compared with control groups[3](https://bobandotto.com/books/the-laugh/#src-hudley). Those children were older than this book’s readers and were chosen for aggression, so the comparison is about the mechanism, not a promise of the same result. But the skill being trained is exactly the one Bob is missing: considering that a cue might not mean what it first seems to mean. The book names Bob’s mistake precisely, and gently. Otto’s page says: "You said it like a fact." "You never asked." That is the move every child (and adult) makes: an interpretation hardens into a fact before anyone has checked it. Later Bob says the same words about himself, "I said it like a fact. I never asked." The repair is not an apology speech. It is a recognition, in the same words his friend used. Otto’s side carries a second, quieter lesson. He was laughing because yesterday he took the same jump into the same puddle and "Nobody laughed." "That was the worst part." A laugh shared with a friend turns an embarrassing fall into a good story; a fall with nobody there is just lonely. The book shows a child that laughing *with* someone and laughing *at* someone sound alike, and that the difference is who is invited in. ## How the words do it One hinge sits near the end, a two-line exchange: "Yesterday, nobody." / "Today, you." Because the book is read in both directions, Bob’s line "Yesterday, nobody." has two different neighbors. Forward, it is followed by Otto’s "Today, you." That is a turn toward friendship: yesterday there was no one, today there is you. Backward, the line that follows it is Otto’s "That was the worst part." Now the same two words become the loneliness underneath the laugh. The middle of the book is Otto’s "Not at you. At me." Forward, it comes just after Otto sits down in the puddle, so it explains the gesture. Backward, it arrives before the reader has reached Bob’s jump, so the second reader learns halfway through what the first reader only found out near the end. Besides the printed lines "Ha?" and "Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha.", the laughter is lettered big into the pictures: on the covers, on the first and last spreads, and on the spread right after Bob lands in the puddle. The same letters look like fun on the cover and like they are aimed at Bob on that spread. Nothing about them changes except what the reader knows. Yesterday, nobody. → Today, you. Forward: the line turns toward the friend who is there now. Yesterday, nobody. → That was the worst part. Backward: the same words are the loneliness behind the laugh. ## What the pictures do The puddle is where the story happens, and the boys end up in it together. Bob is drawn wet and hurt but never angry. The sparrow sits on every one of Otto’s pages, so a pre-reader can follow which boy they are with. The laughter is lettered into the pictures, so a child can point at it and ask: is that a nice laugh or a mean one? ## Questions to ask after reading Open questions work best: there is no single right answer, and the point is for the child to explain what they think. Ask a few, not all. ### After Bob’s side 1. Why did Bob think Otto was laughing at him? 2. How do you feel when someone laughs and you don’t know why? 3. What did Bob say? Did he ask, or did he decide? ### After turning it over 1. Who was Otto really laughing at? 2. What happened to Otto yesterday at the same puddle? 3. Why did Otto sit down in the puddle next to Bob? ### After both sides 1. Can a laugh mean different things? What kinds of laughs do you know? 2. What could Bob ask Otto when he hears him laugh? 3. What could Otto say so Bob knows the laugh is friendly? ## In a classroom or counseling session Before reading, ask the class to show a laugh that is kind and a laugh that is unkind. Read Bob’s side and stop at "You are laughing at me." Ask what they think. Turn the book over for Otto’s side, then use the “both sides” questions. Ten minutes. Ordering for a class or a school? Class sets are quoted directly: [see orders and bulk copies](https://bobandotto.com/orders/). ## Questions people ask about *The Laugh* What age is *The Laugh* for? Ages 4 to 8, as a read-aloud from about four. The story uses about 105 words, plus laughter lettered into the pictures. What is *The Laugh* about? Bob falls in a puddle and thinks his best friend Otto is laughing at him. Turned over, the book shows Otto was laughing at himself: he fell in the same puddle yesterday and nobody laughed with him. What does the book teach? That a laugh can mean many things, and that it helps to ask before deciding. It does this through the story, without stating a moral. Is there a Spanish edition? Turn the book over and read the same pages from the back, and it is Otto’s. Neither boy is wrong about everything, and neither is right about everything. ### Bob’s side What he believes : Otto has a new best friend. Two is a pair, so there is no room for him. What he gets right : Otto really did spend all morning with her. Bob is not imagining it. What he misses : Otto was telling her about Bob the whole time: "“Bob is my best friend. You have to meet Bob.”" And jump rope needs three. In his own words, from his page in the book: "I count things. Steps. Birds. Friends." "I’m learning that counting is not the same as asking." ### Otto’s side What he believes : Bob will be glad. Now there are enough of them to jump rope. What he gets right : There was always room for Bob. He came after him with the rope. What he misses : From the outside, a morning with someone new looks like leaving. He did not say the important part first. In his own words, from his page in the book: "When I make a new friend, I want my old friend to meet them." "I’m learning to say that part first." ## The psychology behind it Many young children treat friendship as if it had a fixed number of places. When a best friend spends time with someone new, the simplest explanation a child has is subtraction: if they are together, I am out. Bob does exactly that. On his own page he says "I count things. Steps. Birds. Friends." In the story he counts two, decides there is no room, and leaves. What Bob is missing is information only Otto has: what Otto was saying all morning. Understanding that another person can know something you do not, and act on it, is the core of what psychologists call theory of mind. Children typically come to pass classic false-belief tasks somewhere between about three and five[1](https://bobandotto.com/books/room-for-three/#src-wellman). *Room for Three* gives that new ability something to work on: the reader, holding both sides of the book, knows more than either boy, and can see exactly where Bob’s count went wrong. Research on how children learn to think about other minds points to conversation as a key ingredient. In a training study, three-year-olds who took part in short sessions of “perspective-shifting” talk about objects that looked like one thing but were another improved on false-belief tasks, while children who saw the same objects without the talk did not[2](https://bobandotto.com/books/room-for-three/#src-lohmann). Two months of conversations about mental-state words after story readings improved four-year-olds’ false-belief understanding in another randomized study[3](https://bobandotto.com/books/room-for-three/#src-ornaghi). The questions at the end of this page are built for that kind of conversation. The book’s answer to Bob’s fear is not reassurance. It is a jump rope. Two people turn it and one person jumps, so a game for two needs a third. "Two turning. One jumping. That one is you." A child does not have to accept a general rule about friendship (“there is always room for more”) on trust. The object makes the rule visible. ## How the words do it The book counts the same scene twice. On Bob’s page, the whole thought is one word: "Two." On Otto’s page, the same picture is counted differently: "Two turning. One jumping. That one is you." Same playground, same children, a different sum. The middle of the book turns on the rope. Bob: "Two ends. No room in the middle." Otto: "The middle was always for you." A rope has two ends and one middle, and the middle is where the jumper goes. Bob sees the ends as the whole rope; Otto sees the space between them as Bob’s place. Spread six shows how the two directions do different work. Forward, "I walked to the wall on my own." is answered by "I came after you with the rope." An action, then a reply. Backward, Otto’s line comes first, and Bob’s answers it: Otto came after him with the rope, because Bob had walked to the wall on his own. One way round is what happened. The other way round is why. As in every book in the series, the opening and closing spreads carry the same line on both pages: "There’s always room for you." Two. Bob’s count: Otto and the new girl. A pair. Two turning. One jumping. That one is you. Otto’s count of the same scene: a game that needs three. ## What the pictures do The jump rope is the object the whole story turns on: two ends, one middle, three children. Anna, the new girl, has a name that reads the same backwards, like Bob’s and Otto’s. The three children only ever appear together on the back cover, never inside the story, so the moment the trio forms belongs to the reader’s imagination. The sparrow marks every one of Otto’s pages. ## Questions to ask after reading Open questions work best: there is no single right answer, and the point is for the child to explain what they think. Ask a few, not all. ### After Bob’s side 1. What did Bob count? 2. Why did Bob walk to the wall by himself? 3. What did Bob think Otto had? ### After turning it over 1. What was Otto telling the new girl all morning? 2. Why did Otto come after Bob with the rope? 3. How many people do you need to play jump rope? ### After both sides 1. Can you have a new friend and an old friend at the same time? 2. What could Bob have asked instead of counting? 3. Has a friend ever played with someone new? How did it feel? What happened next? ## In a classroom or counseling session If you have a jump rope, bring it. Read Bob’s side and stop at "You have a new best friend." Ask: is that true? Turn the book over for Otto’s side, then show with the rope why the game needs three. Finish with the “both sides” questions. Ten to fifteen minutes. Ordering for a class or a school? Otto went quiet because he was happy. *Goodnight, Otto* is the quietest book in the series, and it is about a cue that gives a child almost nothing to go on: silence. By Jesper K. Lassen, author of the series · Published by VEN Method · Updated 17 October 2026 Front cover (Bob’s side) and back cover (Otto’s side, *Goodnight, Bob*). A read-aloud video of *Goodnight, Otto* is on its way. The first three books can already be watched read aloud: [*Half a Sentence*](https://bobandotto.com/books/half-a-sentence/#listen), [*The Laugh*](https://bobandotto.com/books/the-laugh/#listen), [*Room for Three*](https://bobandotto.com/books/room-for-three/#listen), and more arrive on [the VEN Method YouTube channel](https://www.youtube.com/@venmethod). ## At a glance Ages : 4 to 8 · read-aloud from about four, early readers alone What it practices : Knowing that silence can mean many things, and checking instead of guessing The misreading : A friend’s silence, taken as anger Opens and closes on : "Are you nearly asleep?" Length : About 105 words in all · 22 lines, one per page · 34-page paperback, 8.5 × 8.5 in SEL competencies (CASEL) : Social awareness (reading others’ feelings) · Self-awareness (worry) · Relationship skills (apologizing, checking in) Editions : Paperback $8.99 (ISBN 979-8-9979707-3-4) · Kindle $2.99 · Spanish: *Buenas noches, Otto*, paperback (ISBN 979-8-9979707-8-9) and Kindle · [buy direct](https://bobandotto.com/shop/) or [find a store](https://bobandotto.com/where-to-buy/) ## The two sides Read from the front, it is Bob’s story. Turn the book over and read the same pages from the back, and it is Otto’s. Neither boy is wrong about everything, and neither is right about everything. ### Bob’s side What he believes : Otto went quiet because he is upset with him. The silence is an answer, and the answer is no. What he gets right : Otto did go quiet, and they did lie with their backs to each other. What he misses : Otto goes quiet when he is happy. He was listening for Bob to fall asleep. In his own words, from his page in the book: "When my friend goes quiet, I think I did something wrong." "I’m learning to ask before I decide that." ### Otto’s side What he believes : The quiet is comfortable. They are together under one roof; nothing needs saying. What he gets right : Nothing was wrong. He wanted to hear Bob sleep. What he misses : To someone else, quiet can sound like no. He did not say so. In his own words, from his page in the book: "I go quiet when I’m happy." "I’m learning that quiet can sound like no to somebody else." ## The psychology behind it A raised voice or a laugh is a cue a child can at least hear. Silence gives them nothing to go on, so whatever they are already feeling fills the gap. A worried child may read silence as disapproval; Bob says it outright on his own page: "When my friend goes quiet, I think I did something wrong." In the language of social information processing, the cue is ambiguous and the interpretation does all the work[1](https://bobandotto.com/books/goodnight-otto/#src-crick). Otto’s page names the other half: "I go quiet when I’m happy." Reviewer Deb Preston picked out exactly this: "Gosh, this is a common misunderstanding with adults, too!"[2](https://bobandotto.com/books/goodnight-otto/#src-deb) The book gives a child an early version of a skill adults still work on: someone else’s silence is information about *them*, not a verdict on *you*. The resolution is simple. Neither boy makes a speech or waits for the other to go first. In the exact middle of the book, both pages say the same thing at once: "Sorry I didn’t ask." Each boy is sorry for the same omission, so the repair is mutual. That symmetry shows a child something worth knowing: a misunderstanding can belong to both people, and both can mend it with the same small act. It is also a bedtime book in its rhythm. Read from the front, after the apology, the story turns to small night sounds ("The wind pushed the tent and let go." "An owl a long way off.") and then to the last lines before the goodnight: "Everything got slower." "Your breathing, and mine." A child is being read to sleep by a story about two children falling asleep. ## How the words do it This book makes the most use of a technique that runs through the series: a line left deliberately unfinished, so that whatever comes next completes it. Because the book is read in both directions, an unfinished line has two possible endings, one forward and one backward. *Goodnight, Otto* has three of them, each ending in a dash. "All the way down the middle—" Forward, Otto’s page finishes it: "One roof over the two of us." Backward, the line that follows is Otto’s "I stayed on my half." The same seam down the tent is a roof over both of them one way, and a border between them the other. "The whole time—" Forward: "I wanted to hear you sleep." Backward: "Sorry I didn’t ask." "Near enough to hear—" Forward: "You not saying anything." Backward: "An owl a long way off." None of these lines change a single letter. Their meaning depends only on which way the book is turned. The covers are the one place the words do change: the front says *Goodnight, Otto*, the back *Goodnight, Bob*. The book opens and closes on the question both boys ask each other in the dark: "Are you nearly asleep?" All the way down the middle— → One roof over the two of us. Forward: the seam is a roof they share. All the way down the middle— → I stayed on my half. Backward: the same seam is a line between them. ## What the pictures do This is the only book in the series set at night, and its palette is the deep blue of a tent after dark. The seam down the middle of the tent echoes the spine of the book itself: two halves, one roof. Bob is never drawn angry, only uncertain. The sparrow still finds its place on every one of Otto’s pages. ## Questions to ask after reading Open questions work best: there is no single right answer, and the point is for the child to explain what they think. Ask a few, not all. ### After Bob’s side 1. Why did Bob think Otto was upset? 2. What does it feel like when a friend goes quiet and you don’t know why? 3. What did Bob decide to do? ### After turning it over 1. Why did Otto go quiet? 2. What was Otto listening for? 3. What do both boys say in the middle of the book? ### After both sides 1. Can being quiet mean different things? When are you quiet? 2. What could Bob ask when Otto goes quiet? 3. Why do you think both boys say sorry? ## In a classroom or counseling session Works best read slowly, in a quiet voice, at the end of the day. Read Bob’s side, pause on the middle spread where both boys say "Sorry I didn’t ask." Then turn the book over. Ask the children when they go quiet, and what it means. Ten minutes. It is written as a calm bedtime read-aloud, about 100 words in all. What is *Goodnight, Otto* about? Two friends sleep in a tent. Bob reads Otto’s silence as anger; from Otto’s side, he went quiet because he was happy and wanted to hear Bob fall asleep. Why does the back cover say Goodnight, Bob? Each cover names the boy you are saying goodnight to. Start from the front for Bob’s night, from the back for Otto’s. Is there a Spanish edition? Length : About 87 words in all · 22 lines, one per page · 34-page paperback, 8.5 × 8.5 in SEL competencies (CASEL) : Social awareness (empathy) · Relationship skills (asking for and offering help) · Self-awareness (saying “it hurts”) Editions : Paperback $8.99 (ISBN 979-8-9979707-4-1) · Kindle $2.99 · Spanish: *En los zapatos de Otto*, paperback (ISBN 979-8-9979707-9-6) and Kindle · [buy direct](https://bobandotto.com/shop/) or [find a store](https://bobandotto.com/where-to-buy/) ## The two sides Read from the front, it is Bob’s story. Turn the book over and read the same pages from the back, and it is Otto’s. Neither boy is wrong about everything, and neither is right about everything. ### Bob’s side What he believes : He can work out what is wrong by looking: a stone, or shoes too small. Then he can fix it. What he gets right : Something really is wrong. Otto keeps stopping to look down. What he misses : "You can’t tell from out there." He only knows when he is wearing them. In his own words, from his page in the book: "When my friend hurts, I want to fix it right away." "I’m learning to ask what it feels like first." ### Otto’s side What he believes : It is his problem. The shoes are new; they will stop hurting. What he gets right : Some things cannot be seen from the outside. What he misses : Keeping a hurt to yourself makes everyone guess. In his own words, from his page in the book: "I keep things to myself when they hurt." "I’m learning to say “it hurts” before anyone has to guess." ## The psychology behind it Empathy is often taught to children as an instruction: imagine how they feel. For a young child that is hard, because it asks them to simulate an experience they have never had. *In Otto’s Shoes* takes the other route. Bob does not imagine the pain; he puts on the shoes. There is some evidence for learning about others through your own experience: in one training study, infants who had worn a blindfold themselves began to understand that a blindfolded adult could not see[1](https://bobandotto.com/books/in-ottos-shoes/#src-meltzoff). That is a long way from a five-year-old on a walk home, so treat it as an analogy, but the principle is the one this book is built on: *experience first, then understanding*. The book also separates two impulses that children (and adults) often run together: wanting to help, and understanding what is wrong. Bob’s own page says it: "When my friend hurts, I want to fix it right away." In the story he guesses ("A stone in it? Or too small?") and Otto answers with the line the whole book turns on: "You can’t tell from out there." Deb Preston described the lesson as Bob learning to empathize before getting to work fixing it[2](https://bobandotto.com/books/in-ottos-shoes/#src-deb). Otto has the matching lesson. He keeps the hurt to himself, so Bob has to guess. In social-emotional learning terms, the book pairs a social-awareness skill (understanding someone else’s experience) with a relationship skill (saying what you need)[3](https://bobandotto.com/books/in-ottos-shoes/#src-casel). Neither boy can solve it alone. ## How the words do it This book is built as a mirror. After the swap in the middle, the same lines come back in reverse order, now spoken by the other boy. Before the swap, Bob asks "Does it hurt?" and Otto answers "Every step." After it, Bob is the one who says "Every step." and Otto asks "Does it hurt?" Before, Bob says "Swap with me." and Otto replies "You’ll see." After, Bob says "You’ll see." and Otto offers "Swap with me." That means nearly every line of dialogue is said once by each boy, and whichever cover you start from, the boy you are walking with is the one who notices, guesses, cannot tell, offers to swap, and then feels it. Whichever way you read it, you watch your friend hurt first, and then you feel it yourself. It is the shortest text in the series, under ninety words. The covers carry the same exchange as the shoes: the front reads *In Otto’s Shoes*, the back *In Bob’s Shoes*. Both ends of the book open on the same compliment, "I like your shoes." It means something different once you know what those shoes feel like. Does it hurt? → Every step. Before the swap: Bob asks, Otto answers. Every step. → Does it hurt? After the swap: the same words, with the boys’ places exchanged. ## What the pictures do The shoes are the most important thing in every picture, and the reader always knows whose feet they are on. Bob’s yellow boots and Otto’s new shoes change places at the exact middle of the book. The sparrow keeps to Otto’s pages, so the reader can track the boys even after their shoes have swapped. ## Questions to ask after reading Open questions work best: there is no single right answer, and the point is for the child to explain what they think. Ask a few, not all. ### After Bob’s side 1. What did Bob notice about Otto? 2. What did Bob guess was wrong? 3. Why couldn’t Bob tell from the outside? ### After turning it over 1. Why didn’t Otto say his shoes hurt? 2. What did Otto offer Bob? 3. How did each boy find out what the other one felt? ### After both sides 1. Have you ever had a hurt that nobody could see? 2. What could you say when something hurts? 3. What does it mean to be “in someone’s shoes”? ## In a classroom or counseling session If the children are happy to, swap one shoe with a partner and walk across the room before reading. Read Bob’s side, then turn the book over. Ask what changed when the boys swapped. Ten to fifteen minutes. Ordering for a class or a school? Class sets are quoted directly: [see orders and bulk copies](https://bobandotto.com/orders/). ## Questions people ask about *In Otto’s Shoes* What age is *In Otto’s Shoes* for? Ages 4 to 8. It is the shortest book in the series, under 90 words, so early readers can manage it alone. What is *In Otto’s Shoes* about? Otto’s new shoes hurt and Bob cannot tell what is wrong. They swap shoes on the way home, and each boy feels what the other felt. Why does the back cover say In Bob’s Shoes? Each cover names the boy whose shoes you walk in. After the middle of the book, the boys say each other’s lines, just as they wear each other’s shoes. Is there a Spanish edition? Yes: *En los zapatos de Otto* (Bob y Otto, libro 5), on Kindle.
